Heat Staking
Heat Staking
is a technique in which two components are connected or pressed
together. It consists of male and female components that interlock
together. The male component is heated to soften the plastic,
which deforms the head as a method of interlocking the two
components together. The benefits of this technique are of
being quick, inexpensive and reliable. Such technique has
the capacity to join plastics to other materials such as metals,
not only does this technique has the advantage of joining
similar & or dissimilar plastics but it also eliminates the
need for consumables such as rivets and screws required by
other mechanical joining methods.
The process of heat staking consists of heating a custom designed tip to form a head on a thermoplastic stud. It amplifies the application of heat staking to a broader spectrum of thermoplastic materials than achievable with cold staking, as well as glass filled materials. The processing parameters directly affect the quality of the stake: temperature, pressure and time - a typical cycle time being between 1 and 5 seconds.
Some of the benefits of heatstaking are no noise, with certain joint design the parts can be disassembled and simultaneous formation of large quantities of bosses or inserts of different head design, sizes and on different planes.
